145 child-bearing women, 2,300 children under 5 die daily in Nigeria – Unicef

- A researcher at the Center for Population and Environmental
Development (CPED) in Benin, Dr. Francis Onojeta, has revealed that
about 145 Nigerian women die every day of childbearing age, adding that
no less than 2,300 children under the age of five they die daily.
Dr. Onojeta, in his presentation on "Innovative Approach to Improving Maternal, Newborn and Child Health, MNCH," cited UNICEF as a source of information on the state of maternal and child health in Nigeria.Onojeta, a guest speaker at an event hosted by the Center for Population and Environmental Development, CPED and supported by the Think Tank Initiative, TTI, an arm of the International Development Research Center, described the situation as very disturbing and called for a holistic action against the scourge by all levels of government of the country. Dr. Diakaila Sanoago of Kenya, Professor Emeritus Andrew Onokehoraye, former Rector of the University of Benin, Prof. Felicia Okoro, Professor Williams Akpocha and Dr. Wilson Imogan, a former Edo Health Commissioner State, among others.
