Biafra: South-East elders submit petition to US, UN on Igbos’ plight in Nigeria
A team of Igbo leaders under the aegis of the Alaigbo Development
Foundation and the South-East Americas Forum vis-à-vis the United States
House of Representatives and United Nations Headquarters.A member of the delegation, Dr. Dozie Ikedife explained that the team
spent a few weeks in the United States to ensure that the message was
sent to the recipients for the necessary action.Ikedife
said that "the two bodies of traditional editors, religious leaders,
academicians, technicians and thought leaders in many areas of human
activity in Igbo lands and issues relevant to the group Ethnic group, Nigeria, Africa and the rest of the world ".
The petition presented by the leaders of Igbo read: "We have been subjected to genocidal crimes committed against us by Nigerians, especially those from northern Nigeria, dating back to 1945."This culminated in the 1966/67 pogrom. By the general agreement of the people of eastern Nigeria, we decided to distance ourselves from the rest of Nigeria, due to numerous waves of unjustified killings."We chose to be known as independent statesmen of Biafra in 1967."Immediately after, Nigeria with its allies declared war on the young state of Biafra."Not prepared, unexpected, we were forced to defend ourselves pendant 30 months before we were overwhelmed by a complete blockade, famine, heavy indiscriminate bombing of churches, markets and other public places."We were forced to surrender to the allied forces of Nigeria on January 12, 1970 to save the rest of the Igbo population from complete eradication."Despite the declaration of the showcase of" without victor, not defeated and the policy of rehabilitation, reconstruction and reinsertion, the economic strangulation and systematic exclusion of Igbo from Eastern Nigeria (Biafra) have since followed."The unprovoked and unjustified sporadic killings of the Igbo continued with the case of Igbo massacre in Jos and the Kano genocide that culminated in the 1966 pogrom," the petition said
