Conor McGregor faces Floyd Mayweather

On Saturday, Conor McGregor faces Floyd Mayweather, Jr. in what may possibly be the most lucrative boxing match in history. Mayweather is an undefeated, historically great boxer; McGregor has never boxed professionally. But despite this seemingly massive gulf in capabilities, the odds have McGregor closer than many of Mayweather’s most recent opponents. This is because McGregor has a huge number of believes and when speaking to those believers, they cite the same reasons why the UFC lightweight champion will pull off a historic upset: size, power, youth, being a southpaw, and McGregor’s unorthodox style.

For many, the different style is a huge boost to McGregor’s chances. After all, Mayweather has beaten numerous opponents who were bigger, stronger, or younger than him. He’s also remained unbeaten despite facing his fair share of left-handers. But the one thing Mayweather hasn’t faced is a guy like Conor McGregor, and according to McGregor, it’s not possible for Mayweather to adequately prepare for him because he is one of a kind.

“What other mixed martial artist is there like me?” McGregor told The Mac Life, recently. “He’d need to reincarnate Bruce Lee and that would be the only person that could mimic me, what way I’m coming at him. I’m not like any other mixed martial artist. I’m not like any other boxer. I am in a league of my own and I will prove that on August 26.”

And for McGregor, that is his advantage. Mayweather is a man from an established lineage of boxers and he could bring in opponents to functionally mimic Mayweather but Mayweather can’t do the same for him. McGregor says he has been diligently preparing for this bout and treating every training session like the real thing so when the bright lights are on him, there’s is nothing he won’t be ready for and no advantage Mayweather will have.

“I’ve been in this life a long time. I’ve had these mega, mega-fights. I’m under this spotlight a long time, a lot longer than all his other previous opponents. So that’s where he’s probably feeling that that will come to his aid in there but I’ve experienced this time and time again. Couple that with true fights in the ring. There’s been no spars here. That referee is fully kitted out and it’s point deductions and it’s a full on fight so I’m ready.”
