S Africa to suspend meat imports from Brazil

SAO PAULO (AP) - South Africa has partially suspended imports of Brazilian meat, the latest country to do so following an inspection scandal.
Brazilian investigators claim that South American health inspectors have been corrupt to neglect the sale of obsolete meats and chemicals and other products have been added to meat for improvement in its appearance and odor.
The government has suspended exports of 21 companies under investigation, but this has not been enough to mitigate investigations abroad.
The South African Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said in a statement Wednesday that it would block the products of the companies involved in the probe. Its port inspectors will also test meat from Brazil for pathogens such as salmonella.
The European Union, Chile, China, Japan and Mexico on the establishment of total or partial bans.
