Buhari warns Niger Delta militants, Not To Confront His Administration

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Friday urged militants in the Niger Delta to abandon their confrontational stance and work with the government to discuss the amnesty program initiated by the late President Umaru Yar'Adua Administration. MILITANTES-Buhari Buhari President assured the oil companies operating in the Niger Delta that the Federal Government is taking all necessary measures to protect strategic assets in the region of the Vandals and offenders. Speaking at a meeting with the Global Manager (Upstream) of the Shell Group Royal Dutch, Andrew Brown, president Buhari said he had directed the Chief of Naval Staff to reorganize and strengthen the group of military working Joint (JTF) in the delta Niger to deal effectively with the resurgence of militancy and sabotage of oil installations. The President told Mr. Brown that the operations of the Joint Task Force were also being enhanced with increased support and cooperation of the United States and Europe in the fields of training, intelligence, equipment and logistics . He said, ".. We must be very serious with the situation in the Niger Delta, as it threatens the national economy I assure you that everything possible be done to protect staff and assets of oil in the region" He urged aggrieved persons, activists and communities in the Niger delta to abandon its confrontational stance and work with those who have been indicted by the Federal Government to review the amnesty program initiated by the Yar'Adua Administration for benefit of all parties. Buhari President praised the strength and resilience of Shell in Nigeria despite the operational challenges of the environment. the company was urged to do everything possible to end gas flaring in the Niger Delta quickly and produce more gas for electricity generation to support manufacturing and job creation in the country. Mr. Brown had called for an urgent solution to rising crime and militancy in the Niger Delta. The Shell Executive also dispelled speculation that the company was withdrawing from Nigeria. He said that contrary to such speculations, Shell is currently in talks with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) in new projects of oil and gas joint.
